Google’s Tracking Shame

Internet giant fined £14.4m for secretly tracking millions of web surfers.

Yesterday it was announced that Google had broken privacy promises by tracking users of Apple’s Safari browser. The company overrode safeguards designed to prevent outside parties monitoring users’ activity without their permission.

The penalty is the largest fine imposed by the US Federal Trade Commission against a company for violating a previous agreement with the agency. An investigation was launched six months ago after a US researcher revealed how Google had overridden Safari Privacy Safeguards.

Perhaps Google is not as untouchable as we may have once believed…
