Pussy Riot on Trial

Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist punk group have gone on trial this week in Moscow for their protest performance in February this year against President Vladimir Putin. The band crashed into Christ the Saviour’s cathedral in Moscow and demanded that the Virgin Mary put a halt to Putin’s power.
Three of the five band members, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich have been taken into trial this week, whilst the two others have voiced their opinion claiming that “Putin is scared” of them because they are a “young, positive, optimistic women unafraid to speak their minds”.
Whilst many Russians were distraught by the event, international personalities have pronounced their support, including bands Franz Ferdinand and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The three members have apologised for their behaviour but denied they were committing anything unlawful. Lawyers have asserted that the charges were “absurd”, yet it has been suggested that the court may be swayed by Putin’s own judgements on the incident. The band could potentially deal with seven years in jail on charges of hooliganism.
