Paddock Wood’s ultimate reggae and dub festival returns this August for its 5th anniversary celebration, boasting the widest range of Jamaican-inspired talent in England. This festival, created as a commemoration of Bob Marley’s most instrumental ‘One Love Peace’ concert of 1978, which ultimately ended the civil rivalry in Jamaica between the two most notorious political parties; Jamaican Labour Party and People’s National Party, but enough about politics, let’s get down to the music.
Situated in Kent’s finest festival site, home of the Hop Farm Festival this year which featured the likes of Bob Dylan, George Clinton & Funkadelic and underground cult favourite Gary Numan, unfortunately One Love festival seems not to live up to the line up of Hop Farm. Displaying the likes of dub innovators Alpha & Omega, probably most famous for their track ‘Haze’ (which should please the smokers in the crowd) and headliner Freddie McGregor, credited as the most ‘durable’ reggae and soul singer. Whether being durable is a good thing or not remains to be seen. Despite the lack of crowd favourites in this line up, One Love in fairness has a wide range of musical vibes to suit all reggae lovers, and Dawn Penn’s ‘No, No, No’ should go some way to bring the weed-infested house down. Timed to coincide with Jamaica’s 50th year of independence, the UK’s only reggae festival will be a sophisticated way for the middle-class white folk to pretend they’re Rasta’s and praise Jah, even just for one weekend.
Here's a video from last year's festival to get you excited for Dawn Penn.
