Karl jumps on Olympic bandwagon

Where Karl Lagerfeld goes the fashion world follows. His Chanel capsule collection themed around the Olympics will launch in Selfridges tonight where he will be there in person presumably complete with compulsory black sunglasses (literally can only find one photo of him without them) to open it. The Olympics is officially taking over.
Even on my way home last night Boris Johnson’s unmistakable voice scared the hell out of commuters as he reminded us to “get ahead of the Olympics” over the tannoy. Fashion designers have got caught up in Olympics fever with Ashish launching a collection for Topshop featuring tongue in cheek slogans such as ‘Don’t play games’ and ‘2nd place’ on relaxed, easy to wear basics. The sweater and trackies printed all over with international flags is a bit too tourist for some but would make a great statement piece. Chanel’s offerings at Selfridges although way up in the price stakes compared to Ashish’s collections still follow the Olympics theme with bronze, silver and gold collars with gold being the main colour throughout. The collection will be displayed in a pop-up store on the third floor of Selfridges. Sleek sportswear lines have been a key trend this season with designers and brands such as Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and See Chloe going for a more minimalist, urban look. Boy meets girl dressing as we all know gives a more relaxed and nonchalant vibe and works as a refreshing antidote to the uber girly, powder pinks seen at the Chanel and Meadham and Kirchhoff shows – clothes are always better a little bit dishevelled and oversized.
You may not be the next Usain Bolt and the bombardment of Olympics themed stuff may be a bit unbearable right now, but it’s the Olympics and if it’s good enough for Karl it’s good enough for me.
