GEMA, the German performing right society for music, recently announced a new accounting system to become effective by 2013 which will ruin many clubs because of a tremendous increase in charges.
The GEMA which represents more than 65,000 artists has proposed a system which obligates the clubs to pay a percentage of their earnings that will depend upon the size of the club and the price of the tickets. The system will also be looking at how many hours the venue is open. The actual rise in fees is expected to be up to 1200 per cent.
This is especially worrying for huge clubs such as Berghain, which is claiming that the club would have to pay 300,000€, tenfold its current fee for the performing right society. For club goers, the fee rise will have repercussions on the prices of the tickets and drinks, making the nightclubbing in Berlin, and Germany in general, a very risky venture for owners and very expensive leisure for customers with an unclear future.
