Bombus Is Back

Monday 28th May 2012 | Osh

The  Bombus subterraneus, which is a certain type of bee found most commonly in Sweden, was declared extinct in the UK just over a decade ago. Scientists which have flown the species over from Sweden hope that they can regenerate its presence here in the UK once again.

They have been let loose In hope that they’ll make a beeline (pardon the pun), for the Red Clover, White Dead Nettle, Yellow Flag and Tufted Vetches that have bloomed so brilliantly over the past couple of weeks in the May sunshine.

The leading expert in the project Nikki Gammons has said ‘This is a flagship project and a scientific first but also a symbol that hope isn’t lost: we don’t have to stand by helplessly watching species and habitats being lost.’

The short tailed bumble bee which like other species of bees has the crucial role of pollinating plants so that we can live was once common in the UK but rapidly declined into extinction over the last 60 years.

So keep a lookout for this new species, there easy to recognise with one big and one little yellow stripe on their backs.
