For Dementia Sufferers, Music Unlocks Door For Real Personality To Shine

Tuesday 17th April 2012 | Osh

The power of song is triggering the memories of many people with the disease.  There are 670,000 cases in the UK today and many more which are undiagnosed.

It is being recognised that exposure to the arts can help sufferers to reconnect with themselves and even slow their rate of decline.

Music is helping doctors and carers reach those who have been struck with the disease.  There have been various schemes which have been set up to help those affected, including a songwriting project in Suffolk and the charity Arts4Dementia announced that it had involved major London venues to benefit those in the early stages.  The National Portrait Gallery, Cadogan Hall and the National Theatre are amongst them.

For those in the late stages, professional musicians use their skills to connect with patients by going into care homes.
