One Direction Gets Highest US Hot 100 Debut For UK Act In 14 Years

‘What makes you beautiful’ is the highest US Hot 100 debut for a UK act in over 14 years. It debuts at number 28 and this is the highest position for a UK act since the Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony,’ entered at number 13 in 1998.
According to Nielson SoundScan, ‘Beautiful’ sold 132,000 downloads in its first week and started at number 12 on the Digital Songs chart.
The last UK group to see its first US single start higher was the Spice Girls with ‘Wannabe’ in 1997 at number 11. The song shot to number 1 four weeks later and spent a further 4 weeks at the top.
The boys are in for a bright future, cracking America is every musician’s dream and they are on the right track.
