Goth Trad

Tuesday 21st February 2012 | Osh

Japanese dubstep makes itself heard over here in the genre’s founding city.

In most ways, the culture of Japan couldn’t stand further afield from South London’s grimey, urban persona, yet this DJ and producer has merged the two together. Like a lot of the original dubstep producers; Skream and Mala, Goth Trad states his influences started out as firmly rooted in grime which helped his style evolve into dubstep back in 2006. Despite having relatively recent releases in the UK, Goth Trad has been at the forefront of boosting the underground bass music scene in Japan for the best part of a decade with a night he hosts, Back To Chill, and his own radio show of the same name. He’s integrated himself well into the UK scene with his sounds being praised and is also signed to Deep Medi: a sign that we were right in appreciating the music this man has to offer. Even though it’s been out for a year and a half now, ‘Babylon Fall’ is a good place to start if you’re new to Goth Trad, with roots vocalist samples expressing unity against the system over a warm bass. Even from the other side of the world, we can see that Goth Trad still stands for the original, thoughtful and deep style of bass music that we shouldn’t be letting slip behind any kind of Skrillex-shaped shadows.
