Dante Autullo struggled to believe it when his head X-Ray showed a 7cm nail embedded in his skull. He was building a shed using the nail gun above his head when he accidentally fired it.
Mr Autullo felt a punch on the side of the head. He went to bed without giving the matter much consideration. The next day he awoke feeling nauseous. At the behest of his long-term partner Gain Glaenzer, Mr Autullo went to hospital. 'I thought it went past my ear,’ he said when explaining his delay in seeking medical attention.
After analysing his X- Rays, doctors explained to Mr Autullo that the nail had impaled him through the middle of his brain, narrowly missing the centre controlling motor function.
Mr Autullo was astonished upon hearing the diagnosis. He thought the doctors were joking at first. He was taken to another hospital where he underwent surgery 36 hours after having sustained the injury.
The operation to remove the nail was difficult and dangerous, but it was performed without hitch. Mr Autullo is currently in convalescence.
