Loco Dice is a Tunisian German techno DJ who grew up in his adopted home of Dusseldorf. Originally a successful German Hip Hop rapper and an accomplished DJ, he left the Hip Hop scene in search of new Horizons. He fell in love with House music so the new chapter began. If you listen carefully to Loco Dice’s sets you can feel his sense of grooves and with an urban tint, which came from his Hip Hop roots. I caught up with Dice at his Desolat headquarters after his most recent South America tour for a quick chat.
Yo Dice , what’s been going on?
Hey Joe, as you know I have just finished my South America tour which was pretty hard and very tiring. I just got back yesterday; it was very draining, as I had to go straight from my South America tour to go to my friends wedding. It was a very tight schedule I tell you!
You used to be a German hip hop star, who made a career in your own right and you also supported the likes of Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Jamiroquai, Usher and many more. What made you switch over to techno and house?
There was a time when Hip Hop became a little bit boring in Germany, the German Hip Hop was ruling the scene and then from the states there was not a lot of good Hip Hop coming in. It was a lot of covers from the 80’s etcetera, by that time I already discovered electronic music for myself but I never thought that I would change. I needed another challenge, something more that you make me as an artist explore myself. I found this in electronic music. There is a wide range of music that you can experiment with, where as with Hip Hop its very one directional. What they give you is what you must play.
What is your biggest musical achievement to date?
Phew, that’s a hard one…. let me think? I suppose its currently making my family happy, the Desolat artists that im growing and gathering around me. I want them all to be very successful to make their own way and make their own crews. I think this is and will be my biggest achievement. One day I would like to sit with a fat belly on the table and look back on what happened. To realize what we all created and feel happiness for all of us, not just me.
What have you got in store for your fans this year?
Ahhh, I got some quality music from everyone, I ‘ve got a positive vibe that I’m going to spread all around Ibiza. There’s going to be a big smile on my face and some real funny moments. We are going to laugh about it bro.
You and Martin Buttrich have a real close relationship, how did you two meet and become friends?
We met through Timo Mass, he was producing for Timo and I was touring with Timo. We found we have the same interest, he is a skater and I was interested in skating boarding, hip-hop mainly and a taste for good music. We used to just sit there and have a good time. It took a long while before we went to the studio. We really became good friends and we still are.
What do you think about the differences between Europe and USA??
Big Difference, ummm. I mean Party wise of course I don’t need to tell you, most of the parties close at 2am or 3am. It’s a bit of a pain in the ass when you are trying to develop or revitalize a scene and bring people together. Europe is more like the Wild West, you can do what you want and stay up s long as you want. This is the main reason why it’s difficult for the states to build up a stronger scene. It’s a huge country to pull that off and be unified.
What do you do when you are not DJing or producing?
Im constantly taking care of Desolat, hunting for new sounds and looking for good music bro that’s what I’m about…Besides that I try and get some sleep!!
What other styles of electronic music do you like?
I’m really into everything, I’m really open minded.
What’s your favourite food?
My favourite food has got to be Italian; I really love pasta.
If there were one thing you could change in the world what would it be?
Joe, that’s most defiantly got to be world peace with out a doubt.
Name me 3 of your favourite Hip Hop groups of all time?
The first has got be to Public Enemy for sure, second it’s got to be Ice T and from the new school is has to be Jay-Z.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
In five years I’m going to do what I’m still doing, honestly. The next 5 years is exactly the same. The Desolat family will continue to grow and we are going to have some good times ahead.
