Joris Voorn Interview

Here we are The Guestlist Network inside the back of Ministry of Sound about to catch up with Joris Voorn and Nick Fancilulli it’s a massive night out there I can hear it all kicking off and I can’t wait to get into this weekend, now I’m just waiting for Joe and Julia and this interview’s going to kick off and we are going to get stuck into this night.

Why are you guys playing back to back?
Why him- why not? we did the first back to back this session in Miami, we actually did two, the first one was there at the winter music conference, played together for maybe ⅘ hours together.

Was it set up?
Yes, I was invited into his record label night, so he invited me as a guest and we decided just to, normally we’d say Nick play two hours, I play two hours but we were like you know what were just going to do it together and it worked so well.

So did it work?
Yes it worked very well and we decided to do it again on the ovum nights which were in the same week and then it worked again and i think we musically match really well we both had been playing for a very long time so we know how to DJ, we know how to do it ourselves, also know how to do it together, how to react to what the other one does. To keep an eye on the audience not too much to do your own thing but to keep an eye on the other person and also on the floor.

So you guys have a similar style?
We have a similar style but different as well, if its too similar it doesn't work because whats the point in working together, of course we have an overlap in a certain way, I will play records he won’t play and the other way around as well, which is why I think it works.

What format do you use?
We both use traktor, we just set up everything working so I think Nick is still using his CD players with traktor I just use media controllers  

Regarding the production you have so many different names why Joris?
I started to DJ in the 90’s and in the 90’s producers had 10, 15, 20, 30 different names, they used to release a record every month, it was always a different thing also music at that time wasn’t really about the person, wasn’t really about the DJ, people weren’t making music to become a popular DJ they just did it for the love of it, i started doing it the same I still do it for this reason but what I’m trying to say is I think I have a bit of this heritage from that time that I thought it would be cool to release music, also different styles of music under a different name, at this point that’s something of the past, I don’t use these other names anymore, I love the records that I did but nowadays I’ll just release everything under my own name.

The titles comes from the way it was produced the title ‘Incident’ because I used to have a lot of loops on my computer that I made in 2000 and I had my record playing next to my computer and i was sampling loops after loops and all kinds of different things. I had all these loops on my computer and 3 or 4 years later I was looking through everything and I combined these two things the piano loop together with a little organ loop which was the perfect combination the organ really matched and complimented the way the piano was going. I was listening to this, i had to stop and walk around the neighbourhood thinking this is so amazing, so it basically was an incident!

While travelling have you been to any weird places?
I’ve played a lot of weird places, the ones that stick out aren't necessarily the famous ones, its the ones where the audience is really amazing. Last year I remember doing a two day tour in Poland and it was seeing the people there being really into the music in a different and more intense way than anywhere else, these things really stand out. I played for instance at womb in Tokyo which is always, its instant fun its guaranteed its going to be a good night. When you go to a place where you’ve never been before you don’t know what to expect, last week i was in Bulgaria and the people there were so into the music they really understand everything that you do, if your in Europe, London, Berlin or Amsterdam people have been to so many parties there, seen it, heard everything, it’s really hard to impress people but if you go to these places where its relatively a new thing you can really do something special at least that’s how it feels.

What would be the motto of your life-of life in general?
I don’t really have a motto, I do believe in music, I really believe in music and what music does to people, it sounds a bit too cheesy for an album title, but I’ll keep it in mind, no I do believe in things that touch hearts of which music is a very strong one at least for me  so whenever I play anywhere when i walk outside of here and people are appreciative of what you do, they’ll want photos, tell you the names of the tracks they want you to play. It’s the passion for music which is really something I live by.

What do your parents think about that?
My Dads a composer,  Modern Classical music and my mums a music teacher retired, my two brothers are DJ’s as well, my sisters an Opera singer so every-one's into music! My parents don’t really understand the concept of Dance music because its so mechanical and repetitive but they appreciate me doing music even tho they might not call it music.
