Jack Beats Interview

House | Tuesday 22nd November 2011 | Osh

Jack Beats are a multiple DMC Award winning DJ duo made up of Niall Dailly (DJ Plus One of Scratch Perverts fame) and Ben Geffin (The Mixologists). They have had an immediate and profound effect on the club scene since teaming up in 2007; producing huge remixes for La Roux, Passion Pit and Florence & The Machine amongst others and releasing their genre bending ‘U.F.O’ EP on Hervé’s Cheap Thrills Records.

Citing influences as diverse as Timbaland, Rage Against the Machine, A Guy Called Gerald and Sebastian, the two began to hone a style fusing House, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass and Dubstep with Electro and Baltimore Club, and what emerged was a cutting edge sound.

Support from major industry players Zane Lowe, Annie Mac (who has played almost everything they have produced), Diplo, A-Trak and the Crookers plus the whole of blog-land took them to the next level in 09. Jack Beats are currently working on their debut album and continuing to tour the world...

You arrived on the scene with your remix of Project Bassline’s song “Drop The Pressure” and started the ‘Jack Beats’ signature sound, you guys have had some big singles like “Shutterbug” by Big Boi, remixes for Passion Pit and Florence and The Machine and Revolution, word on the street is that you are working on a new album, what is going on with that ?

Yeah man, we’ve been writing it for about 18 months and we are in the last stages, finishing it up. Basically, just sort of refining tracks now, we’ve written a bunch, god knows how many songs we have started, and we’ve wittled it down to about 29 tracks that we really like for the album..., that’s got to come down to about 12 over the next 3 or 4 months, so yeah we’ll release some singles very soon and the album will probably come out early next year now because it has taken a while to get right and we want to do it properly man.

So are there any collaborations on the album?
Yeah! There will be a few collabs on it, can’t currently say too much about it right now, we’ve done one with Diplo that people kind of know about right now.

Sweet! The music you make is very dancefloor orientated, can we expect anything different?

I mean, the album is definitely what people will know and expect from Jack Beats, but equally it is an album, so it has to go up and down, it has to travel like an album should, not just a collection of tracks, that in my opinon would be a mixtape. There will be some old and new stuff, some suprises and hopefully inkeeping musically what we have been doing before. A different approach to dance music. People can decided whether we have done that or not...

Tell us about ‘Jack Beats Loves’...What can we expect?

Yeah man, well, when we’ve been touring the world we titled our shows like “Jack Beats Loves....”, so‘Jack Loves the UK’, ‘Jack loves America’, so when we started a night at Fabric, it was sort of logical to call it ‘Jack Beats Loves Fabric’. The night worked out really well and we are going to keep it going, next one is July 8th. It’s quite exciting man. Do you want to speak to Ben for some of the answers aswell?

Yeah dude. Hi Ben, What is the line up for your Fabric night?

At the moment, we have Sub Focus, Toddla T, Tayo, Mele and of course us on the bill.

You guys are all around the shop with your tour, what item can you not live without?

Benii:I’ll go for the obvious and say my laptop!
Neil: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhummmmm....Socks.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Great answer! Haha

So here’s a scenerio, you are exiled from your home and thrown onto a desert island. What 3 people (dead or alive) would you bring?

I would bring Michael Jackson so I could watch him dance, I would bring Ghandi for a bit of insight and...........let me think, obviously some sort of female, A male dominated island would get a bit weird! So, Cindy Crawford!

If you were invisible for one day, what would you do?

If I was invisible for the day I would definitely hangout at some sort of women’s swimming/toilet changing rooms...is that creepy?

I would definitely hangout at some sort of women’s swimming/toilet changing rooms...is that creepy?

I got another one! I’d go to our managers office! Not that he doesn’t do alot, he does loads. I would actually send him some of our music then go to his office to see what he really thinks! haha!

So, can you recall a really great gig that you’ve played at, like really great vibes.

Hmmm, that hard. I would say HARD Halloween in Los Angeles!
