Joker Interview

Tuesday 22nd November 2011 | Annalisa

This Bristol-based grime and dubstep producer is to release his debut album 'The Vision' on 31st October. We caught up for a random chat!

So how’s it going with your label ‘Capsize’ at the moment?
At the moment it’s a bit quiet because I’ve been spending time finishing the album, I finished the album but once that’s out the way I’m going to start working on getting more artists on there.

So when is the album out?
The 31st October.

Being from Bristol is there anyone that has really influenced you from there?
Mainly my friends that I make music with or who are around me. The funny thing is that I don’t really know a lot of the old school Bristol legends and their music which is pretty sad of myself! I need to go back in time and find out. I’ve just been busy riding bikes and worrying about what’s happening now.

The stuff from your new album is a lot more vocal-based than your old stuff. What made you want to change?
Nothing made me want to change, I’ve always been doing vocal work but no ones ever heard it. Before this people would have said that I’m in dubstep, originally I did grime and that’s mainly vocal-based as well, it’s nothing new.

You’ve collaborated with a few people on your new album, is there anyone in particular you liked working with?
Everyone. I don’t want to make someone sound better. Everyone’s doing their own thing.

Have there been any favourite places that you have played recently?
Japan is one of my favourites. Denmark, London and of course Bristol.

Yeah, Bristol of course!
Japan was really really good, we got drunk every night and played ping pong.

So now you’ve finished the album, what’s next?
To work on the second one.

So you are getting straight into it?
Yeah. straight into working on the second album and doing production work for other artists.

Have you got any music videos from songs off your new album?
Yeah, there’s one done from the album called ‘Back in the Days’, that’s up on YouTube now and there will be one coming any time soon called ‘On my mind’.

What’s the story of the ‘Back in The Days’ video?
The ‘Back in the Days’ video is the concept that that it starts off in my bedroom, back in the day sometime, we’re doing a set, everyone’s on the mic, I’m DJ’ing then as usual my mum comes in and shouts “Turn the fucking music down!” and we’re all like “Ahhh psssstttt!!” then we go into the future which is present time and we’re chatting about shit.

If you were stranded on a desert island and you could take three famous people, who would they be?
Ah this is a hard one! Pharrell would have to be there, James Stuart because I’ll need someone to ride with and a clone of me.

What so you can hang out with yourself?
Yeah, that would be pretty funny!

Cheating on someone is OK as long as you.......fill in the blanks?
As long as I got a lot of money for it...come on! Give them half innit. If you had a boyfriend and he cheated on you and he was like “Look, I got paid a million pounds?!”

If you were invisible for the day, what would you do?
I would steal loads of Rolex’s, loads of synths and steal cars!

Are spiders evil?
Kill all spiders! Every time a spider comes into my flat I grab both my cats, drop them next to it and they eat them!

Do you believe unicorns exist?
Am I gay if I say yes?

No that doesn’t make you gay.
Maybe. I don’t know.

If you could set up your own festival and could choose any artist to play there, who would it be?
I think I’d get a few dubstep artists I enjoy. I’d get Redlight to play, Breakage, N*E*R*D then Stevie Wonder, but they all have to play together!

Have you ever slept with a midget?
(points at his girlfriend) She’s quite small! (laughs)

Do you prefer the old days?
I preferred music in the old days.

So are you going to try and bring back that old music into the music you’re making now?
I don’t think any one can do that because back then people didn’t have all the stuff they have today and you had to work with hardly anything, that is what made the music what it was.
