Kalkan, Turkey

Monday 5th September 2011 | Osh

Turkey is fast becoming one of the more popular holiday destinations in Europe, and with good reason. The weather is hot, the beaches are stunning, the architecture is beautiful and the cultural history is fascinating. Istanbul is an incredibly charismatic capital city, but in July-August time it’s just too hot to visit. Instead of getting stuck among the hoards of tourists flocking to Turkey’s most popular beaches, check out the unspoiled gem of Turkey’s Lycian coast, Kalkan.

Restrictions have prevented it from becoming built-up and the tiny town has so far managed to avoid the curse of mass-tourism. Don’t go there if you’re looking for a clubbing holiday - the town only has one club - and the town itself only has a pebbly beach. However the harbour is filled with small boats waiting to take tourists to the many deserted bays and islands nearby, and at night the town is bustling with people browsing the many shops, bars and restaurants. The atmosphere is laid-back and very safe, but with the prices tripling in as many years, go soon while it’s still affordable!
