Circo Loco Mondays @ DC10
Wednesday 17th August 2011 | Osh
Circo Loco opened the season in May this year at DC10 with an unsurprisingly huge line up. DC10’s opening offered huge contrast to that of Amnesia and Space, which boasted a 20,000 crowd, as it was garage - more than anything - that shone through as Kerri Chandler rubbed shoulders with house residents System of Survival.
The legendary Monday morning session began with a few hardcore ravers in 2000, but it was in 2002 when its reputation began to build. Promoted by Briton Charlie Chester along with its two Italian owners, Antonio and Andrea Pelino, it hosted both European and British DJ’s. Such as Pete Tong, Steve Lawler and Sasha.
DC10 is perceived to have an existence outwith the Island’s “super clubs”. Its Italian owners did not conform to a huge purpose-built, corporate club. In fact, Andrea describes deciding to charge on the door as:
“one of the hardest decisions to make, but you know we had no other choice and we needed to take in count the position of the Venue, having a great party is fantastic but if you lose money every time, you can’t go far… So we charged but really small fee compared to other clubs, and our door policy is very cool, we let a lot of people get in for free and you know it… It’s very rare that a seasonal worker pay at Circo Loco”
Located in an old plane hanger, the music and open air atmosphere is more reminiscent of raves in the acid-house era. And in 2011 it still remains at the forefront of underground house and techno.
However the club ran into legal issues in 2008, 2009 and 2010. This was primarily due to the club not having a licence for 65 people, which unsurprisingly it regularly exceeded. Against expectations the club reopened in 2010, heralding in a “New Era.”
Circo Loco itself is one of the most infamous party brands. Antonia and Andrea introduced Circo Loco to Ibiza in 1999 after a decade of “inspirational clubland adventures” in Italy. It was an immediate success on the White Isle and its carnival atmosphere lends itself well to its Clown logo, which has become the most iconic symbol for ravers on the island.
Circo Lcoo thrived at DC10 in the 00s and looks set to continue its success into the 10s. It has now hit Barcelona Ghoa Beach Club, which this year opened with Lee Curtis, Cassy, Ryan Crosson and Clive Henry continuing on its open air, underground vibe.
