We chatted Stockholm raves and house gems with Local Talk

House | Monday 17th November 2014 | Cristina

Local Talk are a Swedish house label which should need no introduction, having released the likes of Jonas Rathsman, Kyodai and Purple Velvet. I caught up with label owners Tooli and Mad Mats, in light of their recent collaboration with Nacho Velasco, the DJ known for his famous Mallorca club Garito. The release, Music Joined Us, features a mix by Velasco containing dusty, old Local Talk gems, as well as some of their freshest talent. It’s a great retrospective of the label, containing a refreshing mix of house ranging from jazzy to funky to deep. I decided to pick Tooli’s brains about it.

Local Talk is a Swedish label...To what extent does the label represent Swedish talent?

We do have a few Swedish artists on the label like HNNY, Andreas Saag, Dirtytwo, Actual Proof (Opolopo), Henry Rordrick, Cazuma and Anthony Bois but we don’t choose our music from a geographical standpoint. Obviously we know a lot of people here in Sweden but we never had a goal to only release national music. We’re an international house label.

What's the vibe like at house/techno parties in Stockholm? How do they compare to nights out in London or Berlin?

The techno and tech-house scene in Stockholm is very dominant, the scene for what we call ”house music” is quite small and is not really represented except on a few offshoot parties. Most DJs over here mainly look towards Berlin to follow/copy what is happening over there. That said we do have loads of good house producers over here that have done a really good job putting Stockholm and Sweden on the map.

How did you and Mad Mats meet?

Stockholm is not that big, most people involved with music and clubs knows about each other in one way or another. Mats had been around for quite a few years and I was involved in doing parties and DJing a bit too.

Which release on Local Talk are you most proud of?

Tooli: Bassfort - Moon Shadow (The first release on Local Talk, the one that started it all)

Mats: Willie Graff & Tuccillo - Sunday Morning

How did the collaboration with Nacho Velasco come about?

The idea came about when Nacho and Garito wanted to do something special for their 16th anniversary party. We thought this would be the perfect way to spread the news about Garito outside of Mallorca.

In your opinion, what are the best moments of Music Joined Us?

The highlight is from the very start to the very ending!

What are the next exciting releases coming out on Local Talk?

There’s two really strong releases coming now in November and December. First up is Crackazat with a 12” called ’Somewhere Else’ that has remixes by AD Bourke and HADE and then in December we have the next HNNY 12” which is called ’Nothing’. Both these releases have been secret weapons of ours and we know people are going to love ’em!

What's the worst thing you've ever been in trouble for?

Playing salsa at Panorama Bar.

You can get to know Local Talk on their Soundcloud or Facebook and Nacho Velasco on his Beatport.
