Warehouse Project Review: 1st November

House | Wednesday 5th November 2014 | lenjibong

Saturday the 1st November saw a 5,000-strong horde of pumped-up ravers return to the Warehouse Party in Manchester held at the original Store Street venue for the most ambitious and mouthwatering lineup of the season. As with almost every other Warehouse Project, this party hosted by RA sold out within days of going online and had been a highly anticipated event on the calender.

The arches of Store Street represented a refreshing throwback, away from the previous venue at Trafford Park which was at least double the size and unforgiving, especially if your sweaty rave train broke down at any point of the night. Whilst still tinged by its corporate side, this WHP was evidently better run and allowed a much more satisfying experience overall. To our surprise, we faced no queues turning up at 10:30 and once inside the venue it was easy to navigate with the lay-out large enough to have a good wander but not too big that you could end up on your own all night if you got carried away chatting to some weirdo in the smoking area.

On to the music. The line-up offered something for everyone ranging from the soul inspired sounds provided by Detroit legend Moodymann to the uncompromising techno of Nina Kraviz. Hugely disappointing however was the late pull-out from Ricardo Villalobos due to ‘airline problems’. However fans of Villalobos will know this excuse is more likely to mean he ended up k-holing in a toilet in the Starbucks of Milan Airport at the same time his flight to Manchester was taking off. Anyway...

Hotflush founder Scuba was the stand in for Lobos and although not in the same league, still provided a strong set of pumping house on the night. Hessle Audio followed Ryan Keeling in Room 1 and presented their usual cuts of contemporary electronic music with Ben UFO the most impressive performer providing a strong techy mix that kept the punters head-nodding. At the same time in Room 2, Underground Paris brought a mix of jazz inspired house that paved the way for Moodymann who came on at the strike of midnight. In the 2 hours he was allocated he gave us the usual dose of soulful Chicago vibes throwing in bits of hip-hop and soul whenever he pleased.

Over in Room 1 Joy Orbison played a solid set that certainly stood out and went down a treat with many hailing him as the best DJ of the night. On the flipside of his set, Nina Kraviz took over and provided the final 2 hour set filled with relentless tech-house and techno tunes that tested the stamina of even the most hardcore heads in the building. As the clock ticked towards 5 and the dancefloor began to scatter, Nina provided that final kick that set up a special finale for those who still had any juice left.
