Colors LDN host the Dia del los Muertos – Day of the Dead Celebration at No. 90 Bar and Restaurant

House | Wednesday 5th November 2014 | Izaradz

For the modern day culture creature, Halloween has long been our final excuse to dress up in weird and wonderful ways for a festival-esque night out. In this spirit, what better event to attend than the Colors LDN Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead party.

Colors LDN is barely three years old and truly lives up to its name in aesthetic, music and concept. Once a month they host a night that promises a unique experience of house, deep house, jazz, funk and disco at a secret location which is only revealed a week before the event. Each night has a theme, whether it is of colour or pattern, to “encourage community, creativity, a sense of belonging and a great excuse to start a conversation” (in their own words). They may still be one of East London’s best kept secrets, but with their growing successes not only in London (having hosted a room in Fabric last month) but internationally, hitting Barcelona and Istanbul last summer, this is most certainly a space to watch.

This Halloween, the night was held at No. 90 Bar and Restaurant in Hackney. As we excitedly walked into the converted warehouse along with a steady stream of Mexican candy skulls, we were dazzled by shiny bunting, a huge glowing skull above the DJ decks and tree like structures around the speakers. As we meandered around the space, we spotted a ‘red room’ where those that had failed to transform their identity for the night were enticed into a new one by the face painters on standby. Although, the majority of the party-goers must be commended on their outstanding effort to dress for the occasion.

The night was introduced by some steady house beats in tune with a cold beer and a gentle head bob. As the set progressed the resident DJs bounced from track to track, literally and figuratively filling the room with colour. An ever more exciting compilation of disco house and funk elevated the vibe and energised the crowd of flower covered skeletons and ghosts. The highlight for me was when Stephane Ghenacia hit the decks and really got us bouncing and waving our hands in the air. Even after 5am this “community” had barely reduced in size.

All in all, a fantastic night, which not even the chilly and long journey home in the early hours of the morning could dampen. I would recommend this multi-coloured monthly madden to anyone in need of some positive, funky vibes. I can safely say that I am hooked and will be looking out for future Colors parties in these upcoming grey winter months.
