RetroSet – London Burning

RnB/Hip Hop | Friday 12th August 2011 | Osh

On August 8 Alyas Jak and Clark Parker from RetroSet, a London-based hip hop group, went to make some music with blindB, a producer from London. After a trip to the shops they were locked out of the premises, because of the security measures caused by the riots outside.
Luckily enough a neighbour in another studio heard their screams and let them back in. The atmosphere of terror outside inspired them to give voice to the people protesting. London was burning down and even though everyone was against the rioters, they wanted to give this youth a voice, understand why were they protesting.
Two other talented musicians Azroe and Redd arrived later and added their own experience of the riots. All rappers involved come from impoverished backgrounds and want to make something of their lives by spreading a positive empowering message through their music.
These rappers met at an initiative called the London urban collective (L.U.C.) and worked on a show called “Purgatory” at the Pleasance theatre in North Road, Islington. They have a large following in London and have made a bold move bringing politics back into music at this frightening time. Check out their video!
