Kye tells us how they manage their busy DJ schedule, teaming up with MNEK for their top 10 hit, “Ready for your Love” and life with Black Butter records. After a phenomenal year the north London super duo producers, Gorgon City gives us an insight to their recent sucess.
So you guys have relentless DJ schedule to go thru, last summer you were booked at many of the major festivals, how did you mange it all?
It can be crazy, last year we was at HD festival and Glastonbury on the same day as we were double booked, so we sometimes get split up. I played HD Fest and Matt was at Glastonbury. I had to jump straight into the car after HD fest to meet Matt and start partying.
So his got you doing all the work then?
Yeah his lucky, it’s a bit unfair (LAUGHS) as it seems he gets all of the sunny, exotic gigs and am like stuck in Swindon or somewhere like that.
But weren’t you guys doing Ibiza last year too?
Yes we was in Ibiza loads last summer, we had a residency at Space every Tuesday, a massive Radio 1 gig at Privilege, we also done something at Amnesia which was mad. I remember falling over and landed on some broken glass and had a bandage wrapped around my leg for the next 2 weeks. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got up the next morning and their was blood everywhere. Artwork from Magnetic Man was staying at the same hotel and he was actually the one who dressed the wound for me. He did a really good job.
So what’s the vibe being with Black Butter records with all those different artists?
It a wicked sort of little camp, Everyone’s really close and were all mates with each other too. They have such a wide range of music like Clean Bandit to My Nu Leng, who does the dirtier stuff. We love it, it’s a really good forward thinking label and they’re quite unique, as they don’t just stick to one sound and their really broad music wise, that what I love about them.
With your own production, were do you get your inspiration from?
Well I suppose Matt and me have fairly sort of same musical backgrounds. We grew up listening to lots of Drum and Bass, Jungle, Garage with a lot of grime as well. Matt was more into Hip-hop so I think that’s where we are different I suppose. We have also been getting into house music more recently and throwing it in all together.
So when did that start to come together for you guys, as you have so many different backgrounds when it comes to music?
We have been working together for about 2 years now, so the projects fairly new. Its feels like it all kicked off over a year ago and it still is exciting and fresh for us. We work well in the studio together, as Gorgon City was just meant to be a one off collaboration as we both had our separate solo projects going on back then, but when we got into the studio, it went so well that we just said, “lets do another one”, so we thought of a new name for it and it rolled on from there.
So what about other artists or DJ’s in the scene, who would you, give props too?
We obviously all the people on Black Butter records, Kidnap Kid, Love Clean Bandit, I think their so good and also their videos so addictive to watch. They’re really original and fresh and there is nothing else like it at the moment. They have that bittersweet vibe to it as well, they strings and the electronica are so good. Were also big fans of other people like Dusky, who's actully good friends with Matt. They have known for years and we see them a lot, out and about. There’s so much good music about.
So going from that what would be your ideal collaboration
Well were quite lucky as we get to work with some talented people, we worked with Yasmin and doing the track with MNEK as well. His just so talented. We did that a while ago and its only recently been released. We were really excited about that.
So out off all that, if you had to pick an all time favorite who would it be?
Well out of everything I think it would have to be someone like Radiohead, my family would listen to them a lot when I was growing up, also Massive Attack, maybe Burial as well as there is something about his music that I just love too.
So do you come from quite a musical family then?
Yes my mum and dad are so into music, old stuff, new stuff, their like always on it. Their old rockers.
What you been up to recently then?
Yeah we are working on new music all the time, there are so many recording sessions with different great vocalists that we can use on an album. MNEK was big and then another collaboration with Joel Compass which we really love. His voice is just crazy and so unique.
So what was your favorite moment of last summer for you then?
Well we played in Circus in Liverpool and that was amazing, for a club night it had an almost had a Ibiza feel, really “housey” and we played stuff we don’t get a chance too that often. The 1st time at Amnesia that was pretty cool too.
So if you had to fill a swimming pool with anything, what would it be?
Well that’s a interesting question, But I would fill it with rum. That could be pretty dangerous actually but it might work. Or what about Nando’s medium Peri-Peri sauce? Soak that into my skin!
Well if you ever do that, we’ll make sure that the Guestlist gang will be there to see it happen, thanks for talking to us.
