It certainly isn't difficult to find examples of when the traditional press have gotten it totally wrong: Brexit predictions, Trump’s election, and The UK's 2017 general election are just a few.
In all of these cases the media misjudged the public mood, failing to recognise that the views of the public were actually different from their own. The problem is that the vast majority of those that own and are in the traditional press do not represent the concerns, fears, and beliefs of the majority of actual people.
As Callum MacRae put it in an article for Novara Media, “(an) elite complacency has sunk in that hampers their ability to accurately predict and take seriously the vast reserves of anti-establishment sentiment that exist in most western post-industrial societies.”
This certainly rings true, especially when you consider that 60% of Britain's print media market is shared between just two billionaires, Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere.
At the same time, there are other legitimate reasons to be sceptical of our public service media. One of them being that in a recent report, it was shown that an astounding 73% of The BBC’s statistics came from Conservative politicians.
So what is the antidote to the elite bias and vested corporate interests that infect much of the established traditional media?
Well, there is a network of quality, independent media outlets already exist – media that is free of corporate or government control such as Momentum or Novara Media. The latter, Novara Media, is an organisation that provides cutting-edge analysis of the issues that will define the 21st century. Also, the re is the not-for-profit media outlet Open Democracy, who have thus far done an excellent job holding power to account by providing quality factual reporting and analysis on important democratic and human rights issues.
But high-quality journalism such as this requires funding. This is where The Media Fund comes in!
The Media Fund is supporting quality, independent journalism. We fundraise on behalf of these excellent media platforms in order to build the resources for independent media to do accurate reporting, investigative journalism, comment and analysis, data driven factual journalism, culture and much more. And we hope to do this on a scale never seen before in the UK.
Help us build an independent media that works for everyone, and not just for the corporate donor class.
