Donald J Trump has won the race, becoming the 45th President of the USA.
His surprising victory has shocked the political elite & the media alike, in a result that'll shake up the establishment like never before. Trump's campaign has defied all the polls and analysts, making shocking wins in key battle ground states like Florida, Ohia and Pennsylvania. Despite his series of controversies, his widely criticised extremist policies and incredibly racist and sexist comments and behaviour, Trump has secured his position in the Oval Office. Oh, did we mention his absolute lack of political experience?
After a projected win in Wisconsin, the Associated Press called it for Trump after he passed the 270 electoral college votes needed to secure the presidency. It wasn't long before Hillary called Trump, ruling herself out of the Presidential race - though she didn't make a public announcement.
"I have just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She Congratulated us - it's about us and our victory - and I congratulated her on a very hard-fought campaign." He told supporters in New York adding "it is time for Americans to bind the wounds of division ... It is time for us to become together as one united people."
The tone of his victory speech was more collected than what we've got ourselves use to throughout this long campaign trail. There were no political stabs, no divisive undertones - rather Trump wanted to look more like the President of a United America than the outlandish, outspoken anti establishment candidate. He congratulated his opponent Hillary, saying "She has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country".
It was a stark contrast from the kind of things we've heard in the recent months - this is the same man who called Mexicans rapists and drug dealers, called for a complete 'shut-down' of Muslims entering the USA, said women should face some sort of punishment for abortion, even said he would throw Hillary Clinton behind bars. We probably shouldn't put any weight behind his words - but focus on the things he's been saying along the campaign trail.
