C-Lance Interview (15th August 2013)

RnB/Hip Hop | Thursday 15th August 2013 | Matt

Due to the popular feedback I got in regards to the last interview I did with Hip Hop producer C-Lance (http://guestlist.net/interviews/9568/c-lance-interview/) who has worked with the likes of Swollen Members, Vinnie Paz and R.A the Rugged Man, I decided to do a follow up interview. This time delving even deeper into the mind of C-Lance covering everything from 90s Rap to Horror movie villains.. Check it out below:

You said you were working very closely with DJ Lethal. Are you able to elaborate a bit more on what you are doing with him and when we can expect to see the results of this work?

Yeah man, first off I want to say it's an honor to work with Lethal, he's a Legend. His catalogue of work from House Of Pain to La Coka Nostra to Limp Bizkit is legendary. Yeah we been working together lately on some dope beats. Basically I make a beat, send it over to him, and then he puts his magical touch on it, by layering live instruments and just turning it into a monster. We started working with Young De from Cali who is dope. Should hear something soon.

Have you ever tried to step out to the forefront and give it a shot on the mic? If not, is this something you would ever consider?

Haha, Nah man, I never thought about it. I don't have much to rap about. I like being the producer on the songs, creating the music is my passion. I think my voice would be weird, Boston accent and my voice isn't that deep, haha, I don't even think I would listen to me. So I'll stick to beats.

Who is you favourite producer of all time?

Good question. The Alchemist. Always been my favorite and still is.

Do you have any interest in music outside of the hip hop world and has any of it had an impact on your musical output?

Oh yeah for sure man. I've always been a fan of Metallica, Slipknot, bands like that. I also sample obscure records from all over the world. So, I'm constantly listening to other music, for example, Prog Rock from Japan, or a folk group from the Netherlands, to pop artist in Turkey. So my musical intake is a lot different than when I first started making beats for Vinnie.

Were you a good kid at school or were you the kind of kid that was always getting into trouble?

Haha, I was a good kid, I don't think I ever got in trouble once. Only time I got in trouble that I can remember, was from Pre-school when I threw a rock at some girl right at her forehead, while she was on the swings. Other than that, I was a good kid haha.

Have you ever been arrested?

Never.

You grew up in the 90’s, (what I consider the golden age of hip hop). Who are you favourite artists from that era?

Yeah, I grew up in the 90s, but I was really young for most of it. I didn't really get into hip hop until 98-99 when I was 11. For me, I grew up on Eminem, and Jedi Mind Tricks. But since your question is who are my favorites from the 90s era. I would have to say Dre and Ice Cube.

How do you think the hip hop scene has changed since the 90s?

Drastically. In the 90s, you actually had Rappers, producers and Fans. Now it’s like every single fan also makes music. Of course there are still the fans out there, but with social media and everything. I can't go 5 minutes without seeing someone post "check out my new song". But, with that being said, there is still amazing music being made. Social media has a huge part of changing hip hop.

If you could take a ride in Doc Brown’s DeLorean and go back to any moment in time where would you go?

I'd go back to both Patriots Superbowl Losses and poison Eli Mannings Gatorade. Haha, nah I would probably like to go back to the time when Eminem and Dre first started recording together, and just be a fly on the wall in that studio.

You have been referred to as the ‘John Carpenter’ of beats. That’s a nice analogy. Do you have a favourite John Carpenter movie?

The original Halloween. That is just a classic. Everyone and their mothers have seen that. He created one of the most iconic Horror characters of all time. Now there has been like 300 Halloween movies since.

You told me last time you were a big fan of horror movies. Do you prefer the psychological kind of horrors, the supernatural kind of horrors or the gory serial killer kind of horrors?

I don't really have a preference, horror is horror. I'm a fan of the gory, the psychological and the supernatural. I just love horror movies in general. Of course there are a lot of horrible ones, but that makes you appreciate the really good films when they come out. I don't think horror movies are as good as they used to be, but the new 'Evil Dead" was dope. Horror movies also mix in with my music; I'm just attracted to the darker sides of music, which comes out in my beats.

If there was a Royal Rumble showdown between Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger, Ghostface (from Scream), Leatherface, Chucky, Pinhead and Hannibal Lector who do you think would win and how would it finish?

Haha, wow I would pay money to see that Royal Rumble. That is a tough one. Well the question is; do they all come equipped with their weapon of choice? If so, I think Leatherface with his chainsaw would take the win.

Do you have any phobias yourself?

Not that I know of. I kinda hate being around a lot of people, I don't get sick or anything, I just don't like it.

Are you political at all? Who did you vote for?

Meh, not really. It's all crap anyways. I voted for Obama.

If you weren’t in the music business what do you think you would be doing as a career?

Man good question. I have no clue, music is the only thing I'm passionate about to actually work on it. I always wanted to own a restaurant one day maybe that is something I'd be working for.

I don’t know if you know much about psychometric questions but apparently the type of animal you would most like to be can tell us a lot about the type of guy you are. .. so… What type of animal would you most like to be and why?

I would most like to be a Lion. The king of the jungle. Every animal fears you, but you're also a family man. The Lion is one of the most beautiful creatures in the world.

I will finish with a few more random multiple choice questions:

Kanye or Jay Z?

Jay-Z

Psycho-social or Violent by Design?

Violent By Design

Vampire or Werewolf?

Werewolf

Eddie Murphy or Chis Rock?

Eddie Murphy

Nike or Adidas?

Nike

Meat or Veg?

Meat

Car or Motorbike?

Car

Godfather or Goodfellas?

Goodfellas

Thanks a lot for doing this interview dude and good luck with the rest of your career!
