White Supremacists Outnumbered in Washington

Other | Monday 13th August 2018 | Roberta Micallef

A year on from the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Jason Kessler, organiser of “Unite the Right 2” obtained a permit to organise another rally yesterday, in Washington DC.

Last year’s rally left several people injured and 32 year-old Heather Heyer dead, after a car, driven by a 21 year-old supporter rammed into a crowd of counter-protesters that were chanting “Black Lives Matter!”. President Trump’s response to this was that he condemned “in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.” Trump's division of blame made it clear that he did not condemn white supremacy, rather, he fed into it.

This year, Trump's tweet echoed his comment from last year.

Kessler’s speech in Lafayette Park, was centred around “white civil rights”. Despite law enforcement sectioning off Kessler’s tiny group of supporters, you could still hear the counter-protesters who were cordoned off far from Kessler.

Antifa (short for anti-fascists), was the most prominent opposing force during the rally. Aside from the hateful speech, no one was injured during this years rally.

White supremacy remains a prevalent issue in modern day America, especially under the current administration.

Nevertheless, diversity will continue to flourish positively, and we all sincerely hope that peace and mutually beneficial co-operation will soon totally prevail.
