We caught up with DMC organiser Sally Mclintock to get the low down on this years online DJ Championships and the DMC UK finals. The UK finals will be taking place on Thursday 14th July at Scala, make sure you get involved! What are the DMC Championships for those who don’t know? DMC is the greatest DJ Competition on planet earth! The Worlds No 1 DJ Championship. The Olympics of the DJ world! How did the DMC championships come about? DMC the company was founded in 1983. The mixing competition started in 1985 and has grown into a truly world wide competition, with DMC events happening in over 30 countries every year. It is the ultimate DJ accolade. Tell us about how the internet has affected the DMC Championships (online DJ championships) In February/March we launched the DMC Online Championships. It’s an online competition where any DJ in the world can enter, something you cannot do in the live events, if you haven’t got a DMC agent in your country. The beauty with the Online Championships is DJs can enter from anywhere in the world and use any piece of equipment they like. All they have to do is upload a 2 minute video. Check It out – www.dmcdjonline.com.
The winner of the Online DJ championship wins $3000, prizes from ALL the sponsors and a paid trip to London to compete in the final and/or showcase at the DMC World Finals in October at The Indig02, London. Its been a really big year for us this year, and the Online Championships is a brilliant addition to our DJ Competition. We have lots of ideas still bubbling away so watch this space. How many online submission video’s have you received? We have had about 300 submissions so far, which is fantastic considering we launched only launched 4 months ago! Do you think that through using the internet has upped the talent taking place in recent competitions? (More recognition?) Its hard to say for us as this event has only been online for 4 months, however I do think it is a great tool to use to show people your skills and what you are doing. The DMC Online Championships has fantastic web traffic, so yes it will definitely help you to be seen to thousands of people all over the world! Do you think this is an interesting time for DJ’ing? Definitely. It’s a very controversial time too. Love it! Who knows where DJ’ing and Turntablism will go! One thing DMC do know, we listen to the DJs! It’s a fantastic year for DMC because we are very proud to have Rane and Serato as the sponsors for the World Championships, and this year is the first year DJs will be allowed to use DVS (Digital Vinyl Systems) like Serato!
How are the DJ’s judged? The DJs in the Online Championship are part public voted as I stated earlier, but the live events are judged by DMC World Champions and Champion Djs. Its up to the Champions! What sort of feedback have you had? How many online submission video’s have you received? Feedback has been great. We sent a set of questions out to every DJ that has entered, asking them questions and their opinion. We value all feedback, its important to us, and that’s probably one of the many reasons why we have been here since 1983. We work with the DJs, and we listen to them. If I wanted to enter this competition, how would I go about doing that? All you would need to do is visit www.dmcdjonline.com, register as a DJ and follow the instructions on uploading your 2 minute set! Its very easy. We have everything you need to know on the site from the rules of the competition to tips on how to promote your set, when to upload your set etc. Tell us about the DMC UK Finals coming up? After a nationwide search of UK Regional heats, the UK’s finest DJs come together to battle it out for the chance to win the UK title and represent the UK at the World Finals which are held in October. The event will feature the UK DJ Final and also the Battle For UK Supremacy, which is a very exciting knock out style battle. The event takes place on Thursday 14th July at Scala in London. Tickets are only £10! Performing on the night we have the legendary turntable crew - The X-Ecutioners, performing a special tribute show to Roc Raida. This is their only UK/European date and are flying in especially for the event! We also have homegrown talent from the UK’s critically lauded rapper Rewd Adams (formally known as Skandal) and producer The Last Skeptik who will be performing tracks from their forthcoming album ‘How Not To Make A Living’. Finally, our host INJA will be performing tracks off his new album. Big night!!!!! There will also be a VIP After Party with DJ sets from 3 x DMC World Champion – DJ Switch / DJ Chris P Cuts / Dusty Lungs and The Last Skeptik.. That’s not to mention all the great DJs who will be in attendance on the judging panel! For full information and tickets please visit www.dmcdjchamps.com What is your first connection to music? I’ve grown up with DMC since I was 3 years old, so you could say its been a huge influence and part of my life. I once was featured on a DMC record actually when I was 6 years old. There was a feature on me and the record in Smash Hits. The picture they used of me was me in my school uniform with a missing front tooth. Hilarious. What role do you play in the DMC’s? I run the UK and World DJ Championships and I also work on the Online DJ Championships with DMCs founder Tony Prince. I also worked on setting up DMC TV and have input into lots of other areas within the DMC company. What do you rate in a DJ? Sense of humour. No not really. Well it’s a good quality to have regardless. I rate a number of things in a DJ. Their selection, and their ability to play to a crowd/ audience. Showmanship, skills and originality. Who’s your top 3 favourite DJ’s? One of the most difficult questions to answer. If I had to pick three DJs they would be – DJ Craze, Mr Thing and DJ Switch. All three have amazing selections, skills and originality. If you could have a swimming pool filled with anything what would it be? Gucci Sunglasses, Airmiles and Lip glosses! Can you give us an exclusive? DMC will soon be launching DMC Radio! Exciting times… I’m gonna have my own show too, so keep up to date with DMC for all our new ventures! www.dmcworld.com Cheers for your time, we look forward to the finals!
