Protests Planned for Trump's UK Visit

Other | Wednesday 13th June 2018 | Zakk

Donald Trump’s visit to the UK is set for Friday 13th July following the Nato talks in Brussels, and faces mass protests across London. Trump’s visit comes after the Nato summit in Brussels, and the organisation plans to ‘further strengthen the bond between Europe and North America’.

Kim Darroch, British Ambassador to the US, stated on Twitter that the visit would host ‘bilateral talks’ between these two leaders.

Although he will still be meeting the Queen, Trump will not be honoured with an official state visit after huge public opposition to the idea last year, calling his meeting with Theresa May a ‘working visit’.

However, protests have already been planned to oppose Trump’s visit.

Owen Jones, outspoken liberal commentator and activist, is hosting a facebook event titled ‘Protest Trump’s Visit’, with 48k people already having clicked attending on the event with a month still to go until the visit.

The event states that the protest will form part of a ‘Carnival of Resistance’, with ‘actions happening across the country’.

Amnesty International’s UK Director, Kate Allen, expressed her support for protests against Trump’s visit, stating ‘when Donald Trump arrives on these shores, we and thousands of our supporters will very definitely be making our voices heard’.

Provisional itineraries have the protest beginning at 14:00 at Portland Place, outside the BBC building in central London, before marching the protest towards Trafalgar square.

Details of the event can be found here.
