The Big Sick is a pretty sick rom-com

Wednesday 2nd August 2017 | Grace

Romances can often be cheesy, predictable and more often than not, pretty dull.

But the new indie film release, The Big Sick, although lined with obvious romantic features, is a genuine laugh out loud rom com with a bit of a difference.

The usual complication with typical boy meets girl stories often goes along the lines of something like, “daddy won’t approve of this handsome working-class rogue” or “I’m a sassy blond woman who works in a flower shop and isn’t impressed by the 200 roses the rich guy who comes in every day just bought.”

However, the Big Sick tells the story of a Pakistani man, Kumail, living in America and working as a comedian. Despite his parents hating the fact he is chasing comedy, they accept it and all they ask in return is that he marries a Pakistani woman, whom his parents approve of as part of an arranged marriage.

But, one night when he is performing, a woman studying for a master’s degree, Emily, heckles him in the crowd and from here love ensues. The only problem being with this perfect relationship is that she is a white woman and Kumail is not prepared to tell his parents, knowing that his family will disown him if they ever find out.

The plot thickens as Emily is taken into hospital and induced into a medical coma. Emily’s parents come to look after her, with Kumail by their side, knowing that he has not told his parents about Emily, they think that he does not care about their daughter.

The story is based on the real-life courtship of Kumail who plays himself, and his actual wife, who both wrote the screenplay together.

This film is definitely worth a watch, if not for the rom then definitely for the com and the coming together of cultures.
