Festival review: Field Day 2016
The wet weather failed to dampen one of our fave festivals of the year.
Taking place across the weekend of 11th and 12th June, the main talking point of this year’s Field Day was definitely the weather – some torrential downpours during the week plus showers on across both days turned parts of Victoria Park into a mudbath. But with another strong line-up – easily one of the most diverse and cutting-edge of any festival out there – there was no way a little a rain was going to stop the dancing.
Rap and grime was well represented with Novelist, Frisco, Loyle Carner, Little Simz and man of the moment Skepta all playing across the Saturday, and as always, strong dance and electronic music contingent – Jackmaster b2b Gerd Janson into Motor City Drum Ensemble into The Black Madonna is a world-beating line-up and kept the Bugged Out tent bouncing into the night. With typically energetic and wide-ranging set, Chicago queen The Black Madonna proved precisely why she’s one of the best DJs on the circuit right now.
Mount Kimbie, a duo we’ve long been fans of, played a rare DJ set over in the RA tent, providing a great counterpoint to the storming house and techno on other stages with their experimental and melodic approach to electronica. And there was another thumping, club-heavy set from Field Day regular Four Tet on the main stage – we’ve yet to ever come away from seeing Kieran Hebden without being impressed.
It was a popular festival weekend in the UK, with Parklife, Wildlife and London’s own Found Festival all happening simultaneously, but Field Day proved yet again why it’s one of our favourite festivals. Bring on 2017.
