Pope Francis has published a new encyclical about climate change.
For the modern Catholic Church, a Papal Encyclical is a letter concerning Catholic doctrine sent by the Pope addressed not only to religious and political leaders but to the whole world.
The latest one issued by Pope Francis is 180 pages and discusses the terribly urgent problem of environment. Pope Francis has asked the world’s richest nations to begin paying their “grave social debt” to the poor and take concrete steps on climate change.
“Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day.”
Climate change is as relevant a threat to humanity as nuclear war according to a report on climate change commissioned by the Foreign Office. Is this the world we want to live in? What are the authorities doing to prevent this? The Pope's point of view is a positive step towards a possible change. Unfortunately not everyone is doing their bit to fight this pressing problem.
Greenpeace was outraged by George Osborne's Budget plans to axe levy support. The Climate Change Levy was a measure designed to promote the generation of clean energy, and without levy support, clean energy companies will face financial difficulties.
The Pope has also expressed disappointment over the lack of an efficient global plan to control and reduce climate change. A real possibility of changing things is prevented by people's scepticism about human influence in this area. Social awareness must be facilitated by the media and the authorities before it's too late.
