Rising star Ninsun Poli chats to us about Sweden and Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Swedish electro-pop artist Ninsun Poli is riding high following the release of her new single ‘Great Leap Forward’ and her second EP. She took some time out to tell us about how she got started, Swedish music and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
How’s life treating you?
Very good!
Can you tell us how you first got into music? Did you always want to be a singer growing up?
I grew up in a very musical family, music has always been a part of my life. I knew at an early age that music was something more then just a hobby.
Your early music was more R&B/soul but your new single ‘Great Leap Forward’ is electro-pop, what inspired this change in direction?
I released my first EP ten years ago. A lot has happened in those years, I have grown and changed, and so has my music. It was never a conscious move. Music to me is freedom. I never think too much when I create music, it comes naturally and I let it go any direction it takes me.
The video for ‘Great Leap Forward’ is very cool, how involved were you in the creative process for that?
I had an idea but I have to give all the credit to the directors and creative mind behind the video, Stina Persson Helleday and Ellen von Zweigbergk. We spent two hours outside in an ice rink, an iPhone, a camera and a lot of creativity basically. Very simple and very fun!
You’ve been compared to artists like Chvrches, Robyn, Lykke Li and Beth Ditto. Are they influences on you or do you take inspiration from elsewhere?
It's very cool and flattering to be compared to amazing artists that I look up to! Beth Ditto and the Gossip has definitely been a big inspiration for me.
Sweden is becoming famous for electo-pop, what do you think it is about Sweden that inspires this kind of music?
Living in a country where it's cold and dark most parts of the years, creativity becomes your best friend. I personally work better when it's dark and I don't have to many distractions around me. I think if I lived in a warm tropical country I'd be a beach bum drinking piña coladas all day doing nothing.
You played at The Islington at the end of March, how was that experience for you?
It's always fun coming to London and sharing my music. I had a great time performing at The Islington and I’m looking forward to more gigs in the future.
Where can people see you over the summer? Will you be playing at any festivals?
I'm currently working on my first album, which I’m very excited about, and will hopefully have time to play festivals as well.
What are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment I'm kind of stuck on this Swedish band called Amason. They're amazing!
What’s the first record you bought?
My first ever record was the New Kids on The Block, Step by Step on cassette. I was 5 years old and had the biggest crush on Joey!
If you could collaborate with any musician, alive or dead, who would you choose?
That's a tough one, but how cool would it be to work with the Queen B!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
That's easy! Sabrina the Teenage Witch powers. Specially when I'm tired and it's a long way home and I just want to be home, showered and tucked in bed in a snap!
If you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would it be?
100 dollar bills.
