Event Review : Louisahhh, Russ Chimes, Gesaffelstein. Jeremy Underground Paris @ XOYO 08/06/2013

House | Monday 10th June 2013 |

XOYO never fails to disappoint, but this night was truly unforgettable – the club was the fullest I’ve ever seen it, with a queue for the smoking area of epic proportions and full on, back to back sweatiness on the dancefloor as the crowd competed to get as close as possible to the night’s incredible line up.

Louisahhh’s start to the night made it clear that this night would not be suitable for the faint-hearted, with one of the heaviest opening sets I have ever seen –  the dancefloor went mad as she casually dropped Tom Rowlands “Nothing But Pleasure” pre 12:15am.

Next up was Russ Chimes, who has recently become well known after the huge successes of Back 2 You and Turn Me Out. He played a wide-appealing set that not only included his own hits but also darker material, and Simian Mobile Disco and Bicep’s huge but still unreleased recent collaboration Sacrifice.

Things were to get even darker and dirtier still with the arrival of the main event of the night, Gesaffelstein. An enigmatic frenchman who had been lurking and smoking next to the previous acts, his sets have become infamous for their dancefloor destroying capacities. At half 1am exactly it was clear that his reputation had preceeded him as hundreds of people crowded as close as possible to the DJ booth in preparation, jostling each other in an attempt to catch a photo or video.  Starting with deep and tech, his set got progressively more aggressive until it reached straight up techno with such an intensity that  I even spotted certain members of the crowd headbanging  - that was just the level of energy produced by Gesaffelstein’s unique mixture of own material and killer remixes .

By 3am most of the crowd were exhausted but the surprise addition to the line-up, Jeremy Underground Paris  eased those with more stamina towards the end of the night with a house set.

My American friends who were with me agreed it was one of the best and most intense nights they’d seen during their tour of Europe: Gesaffelstein definitively proved why his sets have become legendary.
