Blackout Music NL is the brand new brainchild of powerhouse drum and bass trio Black Sun Empire; set to establish itself over the coming year as an innovative platform to showcase a variety of artists.
Black Sun Empire have been fully immersed in the scene for over a decade, gaining knowledge and experience of administrating numerous labels alongside their production success. The label heads cite their reasons for building Blackout Music as a brand – “We hope to build a home for all who, like us, have a strong love for this kind of drum and bass: energy-driven, hard, melodic and a little crazy.” They celebrate the start of the imprint with an EP from the formidable Optiv and BTK, released on the 13th May.
‘Bad Attitude’ is a four track collection of no nonsense, hard hitting sounds that perfectly consolidate the intentions of the label in delivering quality music. Optiv and BTK represent the UK and Brazil respectively and have established a partnership which merges their individual merits for a globally recognised product. The title track kicks things off, taking no prisoners with an elongated lead into a gut-wrenching drop. ‘Malfunction’ is the definitive heavyweight track, whilst ‘Target’ has the pumping bass line to stir up its menacing theme. My standout takes form in ‘You Got Me So’, the anthemic riser that captures a whole host of textures along the way – I look forward to hearing this played out.
The impact of this first release will surely set the bar high for this new venture from Black Sun Empire. Combining the right artists under the one umbrella should lead to a string of high calibre releases over the coming months, and ‘Bad Attitude’ is a testament to this.
