Our Take On... Amsterdam!

Wednesday 6th March 2013 | Becca

The food is great, the people are friendly, the city is so clean: Amsterdam ticks all the boxes.

We spent three nights there, and has an absolute blast. It seems that Amsterdam has everything right that the UK has wrong.

Let’s start with transport. There are more bikes visible in this city than cars: fact! And because of this, the streets are so clean, and the air feels so fresh. Compared to walking around London, you really notice how clear the air is in Amsterdam. The train services are very clean and very reliable. The tram service is also why there are less cars on the road, aslong as you’re careful you aren’t hit by one (we were nearly run down by trams multiple times), they are a very quick, efficient, and surprisingly cheap way to get around the city.

Food. Ah yes, the food is probably around the same price as it is in the UK. However there seems to be more variety readily available. Take your average kebab shop here, it’ll serve kebab, chicken and burgers. In Amsterdam, it will serve all of that, plus pizzas, pastries, cakes, hot dogs, and much more. I was rather excited by this at 3am after a night of drinking and craving a gluttonous snack.

Dutch people are so incredibly friendly. Whenever we looked puzzled, and Google Maps on our phones was not being useful, we did not have to ask anybody for directions, because they would come up to us and offer their help! Compared to London where everyone keeps themselves to themselves, the Dutch people are much more open and welcoming. This was extremely heartwarming, and made us feel so very welcome as tourists.

So there you have it, Amsterdam in a nutshell. Highly recommend going. We booked a hostel with HostelWorld, and our flights with EasyJet. Which came to the cheap price of £113 per person, sharing a 5 bed room with private bathroom. Amazing! What are you waiting for? Book yourself a nice little weekend away this spring, to The Dam!
