Playaz consider a return to pressing matters

Drum and Bass | Thursday 21st February 2013 | Alfie

The news that Real Playaz, the label run by legendary DJs Hype and Pascal, were going to stop pressing their releases to vinyl was a massive blow to many. The analogue vs. digital argument has raged in DNB (moreso than other genres) for many years now - but this was seen as a huge blow.

Due to their roster compromising a number of the biggest jump-up producers; both bedroom and club DJs across the country, and probably the world, lamented this move from the giant label. A certain level of unrest was also created online, when the Playaz Facebook page appeared to mock the die-hard vinyl fans by comparing their format to the now-defunct minidisc.

All of this makes the recent announcement of a proposed return to vinyl, not only a shock, but a very welcome surprise. With recent releases from jump-up behemoth Hazard and upcoming presses from the likes of Optiv & BTK - the news has been welcomed across the board.

I for one, hope that vinyl never dies. Not only for its crackly tones and nostalgic qualities - but for that feeling of joy that DJs across the globe share when the latest releases drops on their doorstep, or at the local record shop. To ignore digital would be perilous in 2013, but this move from one of DNBs biggest labels shows that analogue is not dead. Not by a long way.
