World Wide Awards @ KOKO, 19th January

Music veteran and BBC Radio 6 DJ Gilles Peterson returns to KOKO this month for the amazing World Wide Awards on Saturday 19th January. Now in their eighth year, this ceremony welcomes back some artists from the world wide underground and celebrates this year’s emerging new talent. Heading up the night will be a special performance from Mala, releasing material on the Brownstock label Mala has become party of the family and together with Gilles travelled to Cuba to produce his acclaimed album ‘Mala In Cuba’. Collaborating with local musicians the Havana Cultra Project was born. Representing British talent, the three piece band The invisible will be bringing their soulful vibe to the stunning venue along with the soulful songstress Natalie Duncan, Lucas Santtana, Romare, Hello Skinny, The Greg Foat Group, Andrew Ashong and Alex Patchwork. European tastemaker DJ Lefto, electronic duo Stubborn Heart, Brazilian singer and record producer Marcos Valle and Nai Palm of Australian band Haitus Kaiyoten also top the bill.
It has just been announced that Neneh Cherry will be performing a special collaboration with Rocketnumbernine. The Swedish born icon will be performing alongside Rocketnumbernine as part of their new project due out on Four Tet’s label later this year.
The Worldwide Awards have become a highly anticipated and respected event on the musical calendar and is one not to be missed, if you enjoy real music and have passion and enthusiasm for music from jazz and soul through to dance music and world music then this is the spot for you.
