Last night was always going to be a big one...
Mixmag decided it was time for a proper party, and Village Underground was the host. A great warehouse club, it remains intimate enough for the crowd whilst engulfing the room with its dark arches.
Knife Party were headlining the night; emerging from a summer of smashing every festival they've played. It also happened to be the duo's first UK show since their return from the US. They certainly had the right kind of crowd for the occasion; their brand of self-titled "seizure music" completely ripped the room apart, fans going 100% all out for killers such as 'Centipede' and 'Bonfire'. I hadn't witnessed Gareth Mc.Grillen and Rob Swire mix live before, but their slick set was fast, loud and unapologetic, ideal for the rain-beaten but screaming fans.
I caught a bit of support act Pegboard Nerds, the Scandinavian pair with 20 years joint experience in producing a range of trance and electro. Their very unique and innovative style was greatly appreciated across the board.
Although I didn't manage to see the fierce force of XKore, I had the utter pleasure of catching TC's 2 hour extravaganza with my MC of the moment, Carasel. I've been a huge fan of TC for a long time, last catching him at the D&B Arena Anthology Launch where he gave a sick masterclass in switching up and swapping big tune after tune. He knows exactly how to work a crowd; the room going mental for favourites 'Tap Ho' and 'Where's My Money?', not to mention a number of jungle classics thrown in for good measure. With Carasel getting us rowdy in fine style, particular highlights included the dropping of 'Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and a cheeky drum and bass bootleg of Disclosure's ever popular 'Latch' that I hope to hear again soon. Check out this video from the man himself, who went on to play Breakdown in Belgium and Innovation in the Sun this weekend...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv1ucW_YvXk
A seriously good night with electric vibes, Mixmag is not one for half measures. Until the next...
