Throw your tomato

Friday 31st August 2012 | Osh

Just two days ago on 29th August, the incredible La Tomatina Fiesta took place in a small village in Valencia, Spain. For anyone who hasn’t heard of this before, Tomatina consists of truckloads of tomatoes being delivered to the village of Bunol for one purpose; for 30,000 people to cause havoc and throw the shit out of those tomatoes. Tomatina usually happens on the last Wednesday of every August in the same place with the purpose to honour the town’s patron saints during an eleven-day festival. It has started at 11am on this day since 1944 and its origins run with legends.

If you want to go to Tomatina next year, it’s best to look for cheap accommodation in Valencia as Bunol is only small and doesn’t have many hotels or hostels on offer. You can take a train or bus from the centre of Valencia out to the festival so it’s pretty easy to get to, but if you want to see during this festival, you’ll need a snorkel. If you want to take pictures, you’ll need a waterproof camera. Before you leave, just come to terms with the fact that anything you will be wearing will be completely tomato-sodden and pack your bag around that.  This is by far one of the best festivals you could go to and one of the few places you could have such a colossal food fight without having to clean up the mess.
