Bestival: Film Festival
Monday 18th June 2012 | Osh
Bestival, the festival with the terribly shit pun for a name, is back and boasting a pretty good line up. This September sees the eclectic mix of Stevie Wonder, SBTRKT, Ben Howard, Hot Chip, Kutmah and Florence + the Machine. Not all at the same time, obviously, but you get the idea that this festival caters for a lot of tastes. They even thoughtfully booked New Order for the oldies.
In recent years Bestival has become much more than just a music festival, there’s magic, cabaret, dance, theatre, Bollywood theatre, and generally too much for the average Joe to process until he’s at home, safely in bed nursing his hangover with a mug of Horlicks. And even then there’s still too much to get your head around.
This year, Bestival adds a huge selection of cinematic entertainment to the already overwhelming mix, hosting diverse showings of cult classics such as Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Lynch’s Mulholland Drive along with new, independent film from all over the globe. The screenings will be held in four different venues, one of which – The Sol Cinema – seats just eight people and is powered entirely by the sun. Comic adaptations, Watchmen and Sin City, will also be shown, for their cult status as much as their visual mastery.
Much like the standard of music on offer, Bestival offers a huge variety of new cinema, distanced from the mainstream world of Rihanna and Twilight, giving you something to really get your teeth into. This is probably why then, that the organisers are encouraging your input by offering two chances to have your short film showcased throughout the festival. They’re looking for a film with the theme of ‘Keeping Bestival Clean and Tidy’, and although the topic sounds pretty dull, the chosen film will be shown on all the main stages and screens across the entire weekend. Oh, and did I mention that you’ll win two tickets to the festival? As well as this ‘rubbish’ theme, they’re also looking for short, quirky, uplifting, inspiring or just plain stupid films to be shown in The Sol Cinema. Apparently anything goes, which really should be the motto for the entire festival.
So if you fancy going this year by winning/buying tickets, want to make a film or just want to know more, go to the official site.
