Tales From A Faraway Island

Thursday 5th April 2012 | Osh

There is no place on earth that is seemingly more faraway than the Hawaiian Islands. Six hours flight from the West Coast of the US and six hours flight from the East Coast of Japan, this tropical paradise is literally positioned in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. The eight major islands that comprise the Hawaiian archipelago promise to be the dream destination for people from all walks of life. Whether you’re a surfer, explorer, marine biologist or simply looking for a quiet beach to chill out on, Hawaii has everything you seek.

The islands of Maui and Oahu are hotspots for surfers, amateur to professional, with waves ranging from 3 feet tall off the sandy shores of Honolulu Bay to super-massive 16 feet tall waves off the coast of the North Shore for those who dare to ride the biggest waves on earth. If surfing is your thing make sure you don’t miss Quicksilver’s In Memory of Eddie Aikau annual surf competition which sees the creme de la creme of surfers riding those monstrous waves.

If surfing doesn’t do it for you there is no need to be put off. Outdoor activities in the Hawaiian Islands include watching the sunrise and sunset from the volcanic peak of Mt. Mauna Kea, standing at an astonishing 13,796 ft tall from sea level and 33,500 ft from its oceanic base, making it the tallest mountain on earth. Trekking on the Isle of Kauai will take you on some of the most dangerous trails there are giving you the opportunity to chill out on the most secluded beach in the world. Turtles, whales and dolphins are common sights throughout the islands making Hawaii the perfect place to see these mythical animals in their natural environment. And if that’s not enough, Waimea Canyon State Park on the Isle of Kauai and the active volcano that sits in the center of the island are truly a unique opportunity to see nature at its fiercest.

Outdoor activities, however, are not everyone’s cup of tea. The series of A-class hotels situated on Waikiki strip are the best place to relax in a jacuzzi and sip on a cocktail in the sun and that’s not all, every Friday the Hawaii Hilton Hotel puts on a 15-minute firework display which attracts thousands of viewers to this once-in-a....week event!

After the sun goes down, the streets light up and the music starts to pump. Waikiki is home to some of the most up-beat and trendy nightclubs in the US from The Black Diamond to Zanzabar putting on the hottest RnB, Hip-Hop and Pop events there are around. If the music is too loud, having a stroll on the starlit beaches or hanging out with the various street musicians which occupy the Waikiki strip at night is always a well deserved pleasure.

You may think that all this comes at a pricey cost. Wrong! With rooms in top-class hotels  in Waikiki starting at $120 (£75) and beach bungalows on Waimanalo bay starting at $100 (£63) Hawaii is a very affordable place to be.

All in all, this faraway tropical island promises to make your imagination come true.
