Bombay Bicycle Club Interview

Indie | Tuesday 6th December 2011 | Osh

Bombay Bicycle Club
Bombay Bicycle Club’s bassist, Ed Nash, had a chat with us about the bands new album A Different Kind of Fix, their success so far and their top 5 songs of all time!

“Flaws was so different to what we had been doing before and people still loved it. I don’t think people will know what to expect with this record.”

Tell us how the band started.
The band was formed for a school music assembly in 2005. At that point I was not in the band. They played ‘Cissy Strut’ by The Meters, and a Tom Vek cover...

How does A Different Kind of Fix differ from your first two albums?
This album is far more like our first album than Flaws; it is us playing as a full band with electric guitars. There are far more electronic elements than our previous albums; we have picked up where songs like ‘Always Like This’ and ‘Autumn’ left off.

Were you feeling the pressure after the success you had with Flaws?
I think the success of flaws has reduced the amount of pressure on this album. Flaws was so different to what we had been doing before and people still loved it. I don’t think people will know what to expect with this record.

What is your favourite festival to play, and why?
I’ve always enjoyed playing Reading and Leeds festival the most. The crowd is always up for it regardless of what time of day it is. The first time we played Reading we were the first band on the smallest stage and we still had one of the best crowds we have ever had...

How did it feel to be nominated for an Ivor Novello award, and what are you guys aspiring to now?
It was amazing to be nominated for an Ivor Novello; we’re now aspiring to win one!

Are you planning anything special for your massive upcoming tour?
Nothing has been planned yet but I am sure we will work some stuff out.

What music are you listening to right now? Can you recommend any upcoming bands that we should keep an eye on?
At the moment i am listening to Bonnie Prince Billy and the new Bon Iver album. I don’t know all that much new music at the moment... We’ve toured a lot with a band called Dutch Uncles who are amazing. I went to see a band called Reptar at a house party in Atlanta and they were incredible.

Who, in your opinion, is the greatest musician of all time and why?
Frank Zappa. He has produced such a large quantity of music. He never seems to take himself too seriously and his songs are very funny as well as being very intelligent.

Picture this scenario: if you were exiled to a desert island, which 3 famous people would you take with you?
Stephen Fry could read to me and tell me interesting things. Neill Young; he could play me music. January Jones, for some female company...

If you could be invisible for a day what would you get up to?
Wear a bed sheet and haunt my friends...

If you could have a swimming pool filled with anything what would it be?
Jelly. I have always wondered if you would bounce on the top.

What are your top 5 songs EVER?
Peach Plum Pear by Joanna Newsom, September Gurls by Big Star, Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens, Stars and Sons by Broken Social Scene, and Another Day Full of Dread by Bonnie Prince Billy.

Can you give us an exclusive?
My full name is Edward!!!

Be sure to catch Bombay on their UK tour which starts on the 30th of September at www.bombaybicycleclubmusic.com
