Labrinth

With the 2010’s smash ‘Let The Sun Shine’ already in the bag, this London producer is back on the scene with his new track ‘Earthquake’ and is ready to take on the world.

How did you come up with your name?
I sat down with Jagger one day and we were having like a long conversation and we were talking about him going to do this job with a labyrinth and I was just like mate that sounds like a great kind of performance name.

Huh? Are you being serious?
Are you taking me serious? You can’t take me serious. I basically got the name as I used to write little raps when I was younger and the dictionary was very much involved in these raps and I found Labrinth in there so I used that and took out the Y to be cool!

When did you first discover your love for music?
I discovered my love for music in 1954 where I sat down with...okay I’m not going to..haha. I’ve always been involved in music, I’ve always had music around me and I grew up with a lot of musical people like my brothers and sisters, uncles, aunties, everyone is into music. So I think it was a natural progression.

Is it true that you come from a big family? Are you the only one that’s on the music scene?
Yeah, I do come from a big family. Funny enough like I was saying they are all musical, my brother plays for Tinie Tempah and my other brother plays for wretch 32. I’m the hottest though!
We keep pushing cards. It’s quite cool to have your siblings involved in what you’re doing.

You are signed to Simon Cowell’s label and you are the first person in about six years to be signed without going on X Factor?
Simon Cowell is extremely supportive and so far the whole label has allowed me to do what I need to do with the album. They micro manage every artist but with me they kind of used a different approach and allowed me to do my thing.

How did you feel when you saw a great response from Tinie Tempah’s massive hit ‘Pass Out?’
It was sick man! I was kind of tired of the industry and just doing what Americans do, going for the same formulas and not really trying to be creative. I found a lot of Americans were coming out here and their content wasn’t exactly very clean or not so urban. So I thought that it wasn’t because of our lyrics why we weren’t getting in the charts and that it might be because of our swagger, so I thought why not make a record that has English swagger. You know our sound, our styles and what we’re into, it should be an honest representation of an English kind of urban vibe. When I made ‘Pass Out’ I wasn’t exactly writing this on paper but those are the things that built up in me, well it was a bit of a protest of let’s put it like that.

Let’s talk about your new single, it’s called ‘Earthquake’ right?
What you talking about? My new single is ‘Let The Sunshine,’ we re-released innit!

Oh okay?
No no I’m joking. ‘Earthquake’ is a bit of a protest as well you know because a lot of people were like “Labrinth has gone a bit quiet”, we had a few people come back to me and were like “Oh you know maybe he hasn’t got it in him anymore.” So ‘Earthquake’ was a little bit of a smack in the face for the people to just wake them up.

If you were invisible for a day what would you do?
I would go into Radio 1 and just annoy them and play like songs that they wouldn’t play, like one crazy tune that no one would ever here on Radio 1 and play some next level bashment.

Could you give me any exclusive information? Something nobody knows about?
Oh okay. Um, I used to go out with one of The Saturdays.

Really? Which one? Okay, I’m going to guess?
I’ve never told anyone this.

Whats the most random thing you have done recently?
I’ve done something very random and I wasn’t even drunk either. Okay, so me and like a girl like it was like a while ago though we ran down the road naked and went into the house and luckily no one saw. It was the craziest thing to do and I don’t know why we did it.  It was the middle of the night and we just ran down the road naked!

What nobody saw you?
Luckily no one saw me, that would’ve been a bit weird like asking me for an autograph.
