Ministry of Sound to sue council ahead of potential closure

House | Thursday 15th September 2011 | Osh

Beloved nightclub Ministry of Sound has threatened to sue Southwark Council for millions over their proposed housing development plans.
The nightclub which ironically celebrates its 20th anniversary later this month launched the lawsuit amidst claims it could face closure if planning is to go ahead.
In a letter from their lawyers to their local council Ministry of Sound said Southwark would be directly responsible “for any and all financial loss it suffers both to the nightclub and any resulting loss to its global brand and associated businesses."
They fear a proposed plan by Oakmayne Properties of a tower block directly across the club will result in noise complaints from residents which could subsequently lead to its closure. The council was due to make a decision today about whether the housing plans would go ahead but have delayed their committee meeting by a further month.
The super club has already gained over 24,000 signatures for its online petition against the developments and has the backing of chart-toppers Example and Wretch 32.
"If we lose Ministry of Sound, we are losing a vital piece of youth culture in this country. Nightclubs may have existed before Ministry of Sound, but they were never the same afterwards," the club said in a statement.
