Ed Miliband declares how he is 'so proud' for new Labour candidate Emily Brothers to contest for the Sutton and Cheam seat in parliament in 2015.
The blind parent of two children opened up to Pink News about some of the issues and motivations behind her campaign. ‘Many transgender people experience harassment and that is something that needs to be challenged and tackled. A lot of transgender people find it difficult to retain employment; they have housing and other social challenges.’
Brothers’ campaign is a breath of fresh air in the current climate of corrupt and male dominated UK politics where MPs who are genuinely viewed as role models are hard to come by. She is already bringing light to the politically underrepresented transgender community, however she is not just a voice for transgender but for disability. During the health and social care debate at the Labour Party’s conference held in September 2014, she received a rapturous reception, attacking her Lib Dem opponent for “gesture politics with a scalpel.”
She told Pink News, dubbed Europe’s Largest Gay News Service that ‘there is vast under-representation of disabled people and people with transgender experience in public life, and there is of course vast under-representation of women in parliament, and that needs to change. That means people like me stepping forward, and some people will find that difficult.’
