Ones to Watch: LazyTalk

LazyTalk have been dubbed the champions of a new genre: future ska. In reality, their most recent EP Luzaville proves LazyTalk are actually champions of reviving an old sound: 2 Tone. Yes, it’s modern and edgy and the lyrics are topical and easy to relate to, but the thrust of their sound is based in the bands that influenced them. With a lyrical style like The Streets and a sonic style like The Specials, LazyTalk have ratcheted up the cool factor; perhaps that transformation can be labelled future ska. Whatever you want to call it, it’s clear that LazyTalk know what their sound is, and they have mastered it completely.
Their first release Luzaville, which dropped in February 2013, is a well thought out and coherent album. In true ska fashion, the band is massive, featuring Piers (lead vocals), Jack Wilson (guitar, vocals), Sam Woodward (drums, vocals) Josh Culter (keyboard, sax) and Tag Ara (bass). The five-piece have a happy-go-lucky attitude that encompasses everything they do, from marketing to music videos. You shouldn’t let it fool you though; they clearly take their music seriously. With their roots firmly planted in the London music scene, LazyTalk even graced Southbank with a guerilla gig, no bout bringing a bit of joy to an otherwise mundane monring comute.
The hard work shrouded in silliness has paid off; their first EP made the rounds at BBC Radio London, Radio 6 Music and Amazing Radio, with the eponymous track garnering a feature spot on Soccer AM. Most recently LazyTalk opened for The Specials at the roundhouse in London, undoubtedly a mark of their growing success and solid sound. The album may be short but it is definitely sweet. The simple and relatable lyrics of ‘Luzaville’ are addictive, while the more poetic and refined sound of ‘Memories’ shows their more introspective side.
