KID VISHIS talks about his new album, his brother Royce Da 5 9 and more!

RnB/Hip Hop | Monday 23rd June 2014 | Matt

Kid Vishes has been been making noise his home of Detroit for sometime now but finally now he will be unleashing his debut album 'Timing is Everything' worldwide on the 22nd July! I was fortunate enough to conduct this cool intervew with him where we chat about the project as well as his influences and his favourite aspect of the music industry.

Hey. I hope you are doing well. Your forthcoming album is called 'Timing is Everything' and is set to be released on the 22nd of July. Why do you think after many years honing your rap skills that now the timing is right to finally release your debut album?

Hello, I'm doing very well thank you. I feel that through the years I've developed into a rhyming fine tuned machine and at the moment in HipHop, we need a little clever aggression and a man that dresses like a man.. I'm clever, aggressive, and manly lol.. But really, I just feel that I'm ready. Although I have lots to learn I'm at the point where my growth will be fun to be apart of so its just time.

In the opening track to the album you claim that people call your type of music 'rap on steroids' what do you think they mean by that?

Lol, if you compare me to the average main stream rapper or average underground rapper, I'm 3 times as vicious as those guys lyrically. Rap on steroids is an underground underdog spittin like he wants the spot of whoever is the best.

A noticeable aspect about the album is the eclectic mix of beats which seem to compliment your flow and voice perfectly. How did you go about choosing the beats for the album?

I stayed with the guys that I already had chemistry with.. I didn't want anything to sound forced or generic so I called upon my "Hit Squad" lol. I made that name up because I can always count on Mr. Porter, Chase Moore, Nemisis, and Nick Zervos for some fire!. So once I got those heat rocks from them it was history from there.. I blacked out lol.. T.I.E July 22.

Is there any chance of us getting a chance to see Kid Vishis rocking some shows over here in the UK any time soon?

We are trying to work out shows and tours in the UK and hopefully it all comes together, I would LOVE to rock in the UK! The energy there is electric and soooo motivating for me..  A UK tour would be a great honor for me.

It's no secret that you are the brother of Royce Da 5"9. Has being the younger brother to such a high profile rapper had any impact on your own career, good or bad?

Royce is my mentor and someone who I hold in the highest regard. To have such a decorated, legendary Mc stamp you, it can only be a good impact on anybody's career. I try not to focus on a negative or bad side, I focus on the positive and try to make the best out every opportunity.

You've shared bills with some of hip hop's most respected mc's. Aside from your brother Royce Da 5'9, there's been D12, Rakim, Slick Rick and Talib Kweli to name but a few. Do you ever get starstruck rubbing shoulders with such legends?

At the very beginning I was a little stunned, shy, and quiet around these juggernaut Mc's. Now I realize that I get more out of talking to them and getting knowledge from them. If I meet Nas or Hov, I'm gonna be a little shook but Ima shake it off and keep it cool lol.

Who do you think has had the biggest influence on you as an artist?

Well obviously Royce but besides him, Em, Hov, Nas, Big L, Pun, Lox and Street Lord Juan are the people I listen to that motivate me to go hard at mastering my craft. I'm sure I'm missing a few rappers but mainly just the superior lyricist in the game.

Since your early days of performing local open mic nights and freestyling "downstairs in the family freestyle basement sessions" how do you think you've grown as an artist and what is the most important thing you have learned about the industry?

My growth has been unbelievable because who would have ever thought I would even have a chance at this shit?? Everytime I get a dollar from this rap shit I defy all kinds of odds because I was never supposed to be in a position to do so in the eyes of most.. I've learned so many things about the industry. Smh. I learned that being a real person in this industry is very rare, most of everybody are the fake it till you make it/money hungry scumbags more than anything so be about your business and don't expect to find friends there..

What would you say is your favorite thing about being a music artist and what is the worst?

My favorite thing is just the fact that I get to do what I love, even if I was a working man at a 9 to 5 job I would still be recording music just for the love so being able to make money doing it is such a major blessing. The worst is all the stigmas that come with being labelled a rapper lol..  You say rapper and they automatically think "Versace Versace", skinny pants, and swag rapping while sipping lean and popping molly. Only because I'm the opposite of that lol.

If you could work with anyone in the world no matter how big, who would it be and why?

Probably Dr Dre.. He is a legendary producer who has worked with them all so if me and the Doc could sit down and do an album or even vibe over one beat, it would be classic and a great honor for me..

If you discovered a time machine in your basement and could go back to any period in history, where would you go and why?

Hmmm.. That's tricky because I think everything in my life made me who I am and I don't want to change the plans God had for me or anyone else. If I went back in time I would kind of just be a fly on the wall, a spectator if you will.. I would watch all the classic boxing matches from Jack Johnson to Ray Robinson to Joe Louis to Ali. And all the basketball player greats from Wilt to Pistol Pete to Dr J to Jordan.

I am going to end with some random multiple choice questions:

Tyson or Holyfield?  Tyson

Pamela Anderson or Carmen Electra? Carmen Electra

Wu Tang or NWA? Wu Tang

Night or Day? Night

Drugs or Alcohol? Neither, just Mary Jane

Basketball or Baseball? Basketball

Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park? Limp Bizkit

Coke or Pepsi? Coke but I hate pop.

Thanks a lot for your time. Good luck with everything! Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you guys for the interview and providing me a platform to be heard, the album will be out July 22 "Timing Is Everything" and the mixtape will be done very soon so be on the lookout for the "Hour Glass" mixtape..
