Guestlist Recommends: Ras Sempah & Royal Sounds

Reggae | Tuesday 18th February 2014 | Noam

I was fortunate enough to preview the first notable EP of this young, vibrant London-based band. ‘The Awakening’, a name well chosen, is a good taste of the potential of these guys. Featuring 6 tracks of Roots and Nu Roots reggae, it is a well-designed and enjoyable piece of work. Ras Sempah, avid songwriter and singer is capable of fluctuating between sweet Lovers’ Rock, Roots and Digital without much difficulty. Although he is still searching for his sound and signature as an artist, he holds all the keys for success and will not hesitate to utilise them.

Entirely produced, played and recorded by the talented Royal Sounds brothers, Ajani and Gyasi, this EP carries clear messages of love, unity and spirituality. Furthermore, the musical and vocal diversity and harmony of this compilation is a very encouraging start for the prolific Royal Sounds ‘Family’ who represent and gather  the minority of today’s London youth who hold good reggae and Jah in their heart. If you have not heard from them in my previous articles, this your chance to witness the beginnings of what will soon become a phenomenon.
