Lutan Fyah: Never Surrender My Faith

I think it’s difficult to conceive a Jah Warrior production which isn’t ultimately…good. The UK label takes lessons from the past and adapts them to the present to make great Dub music which is somewhat heavy, militant and spiritual at the same time. Not to overgeneralise of course, but that is a trend I have definitely noticed in their music.
Lutan Fyah with his deep dancehall voice, rumbling on the mike without ever catching his breath alongside some fantastic instrumental presupposes that nothing could go wrong. And, indeed this album is a decent piece of work. A big melting pot of 14 tracks extrapolating there influence from roots, new roots, digital, militant/steppas dub, lover’s rock and surprisingly very little dancehall.
Amongst the selection, you’ll find heavy, thumping bass lines that make you want to make love to a subwoofer (Never Surrender My Faith, Things Better Now), great horns and roots-style guitar (Rebellious, Stay Focus), distinctive sounds (Always Be Loving, Reason Without Conflict) and a very varied, honest range of lyrics (from the classic herbalist scenario to more satirical, deep lyrics).
Overall, it is an album that deserves praise and respect for its eclectic nature, both instrumentally and voice-wise. Especially a successful album in bridging some more conventional, mainstream dancehall singing, of a generation, with the more purist nature of dub music.
