The Guardians vol. 2 is Marvel's most unorthodox franchise yet!
For those of you who may have been worried about the integrity of the original, plagued with the eternal original vs. sequel debate, this sequel does not disappoint! If anything it excels your expectations, leaving you content and anticipating the return of the Guardians next outing.
James Gunn is back in the director’s seat for the Guardians sequel which follows the continued adventure of Peter Quill aka Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel).
This time the crew find themselves in deep water as they try to evade capture and death by the alien race known as The Sovereign, while also dealing with Gamora’s reconnection with her aggrieved criminal sister (Karen Gilligan), and juggle the discovery of Peter’s long-lost father, an ancient being known as Ego the living Planet (Kurt Russell).
Betrayal looms in the darkness and loyalty is tested as the team must battle personal demons and regrets of the past, to realise the importance of family, however dysfunctional it may be, and save the galaxy before it’s too late.
The film deals with redemption, forgiveness, love and father/son issues, with Star Lord dealing with Ego and his surrogate, gnarly space pirate father, Yondu (Michael Rooker), who also makes a triumphant return from the original.
Pom Klementieff makes a comical entrance to the Guardian’s universe as Ego’s sweet Mantis. But the sequel isn't just a barrel of laughs it is also driven by its sci-fi action, which is one of the main reasons it did so well in 2014.
A film of this magnitude makes for a highly immersive 3-D experience but it is just as entertaining in 2-D.
