Alex Agore releases his 'Praise' EP today on No Matter What Records, marking a welcome return to the piano-infused acid days of yesteryear.
Nowadays the good old piano is a somewhat neglected tool for house producers. Perhaps the abandonment of this discrete sound is due to the fact that producers feel the need to explore a deeper, ‘edgier’ soundtrack to their work. After all, why use a basic piano chord when you can create an unlimited library of synth sounds?
This seems to be the party line, based on what has been released in the past couple of years. It’s not exactly a problem; house music owes much of its successes to the wide-ranging practice of complex, experimentally developed sounds that have grown and diversified throughout the ages. There’s just something uniquely organic about a decent 90s acid house tune that is driven from the core of four basic piano chords.
That’s why it’s such a welcoming feeling when somebody goes and produces a belter of the sort. Alex Agore’s ‘Praise’ is a well worked take on that purely distinctive sound; one which is very hard to pull off in the modern era. There aren’t many reasons why, either. It’s all in the piano. You have the assurance of a constant high-tempo beat, screechy background vocals and a feel-good warmth that you can’t really get from anything other than a solid set of staccato piano chords. Reminiscent of an old Alison Limerick or Cece Peniston retro hit, ‘Praise’ is an active reminder that every now and then, people do just want to dance.
Alex Agore’s ‘Praise’ makes a persuading case for why our old friend, the piano, should be brought back to the forefront of the electronic scene. Smashing straight at you in a jingle of optimistic fever, Agore’s release today is the type we should keep a watchful eye out for, and deserves all the ‘Praise’ it gets.
